Gladstone’s Rich Ancient History

Gladstone’s Rich Ancient History

Ever wonder what it must have been like to live in the Gladstone Region before the arrival of Europeans? I recently participated in an indigenous history tour of the Mt Larcom area which provided an amazing glimpse into local indigenous history and culture.

The tour was led by local indigenous woman Annie Johnson and celebrity tour operator Darryl Branthwaite of Gladstone Region Tours. The diverse group of local participants and visitors had a unique opportunity to learn about local indigenous history and culture.

Annie talked with great passion about the deep spiritual connection between the traditional custodians of the region and the land – of which they see themselves as part. Our tour group looked at some local artifacts – tools created by splintering chert and other rocks – as well as scar trees, which are used as markers and a source of bark for shields, containers for food and water and even simple canoes. It was a really fascinating morning.
