Goodwill to all…
The bushfires which have engulfed large parts of the country have made for a tragic start to the decade for many Australian communities, but as we have seen so often in the tough times, the best qualities of Australians have been on display. Unfortunately, too we have also seen some petty politicking, blame and negativity. So much of the way we respond to life’s challenges depends on the mindset with which we approach them. As we packed up the decorations for another year, I was struck by that seasons greeting that seems to be on so many Christmas cards and decorations: “Peace on earth and good will to all”. If we were all to start from that mindset, I cannot help thinking that the world would be a better, kinder place.
There would be less road rage, less people in court, less wars, and more collaboration to find the best and most productive ways to respond to the many challenges that face all our communities going forward. I know it’s naïve to wish away the politics and pettiness that pervade so many issues, but I sincerely believe that if as individuals and organisations we started out with a mindset of “…goodwill to all…”, not only would we make a difference in the way the world works, but we would also be happier and more fulfilled. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the fires, and to the many brave and generous people fighting the fires and supporting the communities through such a difficult time. On behalf of QER, I also want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a safe, peaceful and happy year in 2020.
